SELF TO SOUL: EXERCISES OF REFLECTION, CONTEMPLATION & INTERACTION
‘SELF TO SOUL: Exercises of Reflection, Contemplation & Interaction’ represents a “workbook” accompaniment to the book, ‘Self to Soul: A Vision of Psychology and Spirituality,’ although the exercises can be approached independently and stand alone as an experiential approach to psychological transformation.
These exercises involve simple questions and suggestions. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers, but these are aids towards greater personal understanding and spiritual awareness. This is not an obstacle course, material to be easily digested, or lessons to be mastered. The exercises are written to be addressed in a contemplative way over time through reflection and meditation, and through exploring new attitudes and behaviors. They provide an opportunity for honest self-reflection.
Some of these questions may raise spiritual or emotional issues that cause discomfort, although this is an inherent part of the process of personal growth.
Those who seek spiritual understanding and connection are inspired towards higher values and ideals. Yet, all of us are influenced by practical issues of living, what we are taught, and our personal emotional needs. Most of us struggle with what we feel we should do or have to do, as opposed to what we want to do. This is part and parcel of the human condition. Some of the exercises may painfully illustrate this human dilemma on a personal level. Our “ideal” values and intentions often contradict what we actually do and how we live our lives.
This is an opportunity to look within - and beyond - to clarify, grow, and pinpoint areas that need to be worked on for a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
Each individual will find his or her own best use of these exercises, which are intended to serve as a vehicle to facilitate the process of spiritual growth. What this means and how to pursue this will vary from one person to another. Some of the questions may have particular meaning, while others may seem irrelevant. They reader may also want to go over certain exercises again and again. As these are intended to augment a process that is ongoing throughout life - as we change, the meaning we derive from these exercises will also change and potentially be of value in a new way.
Some people benefit from writing down their thoughts and charting progress. Other may find internal examination and personal exploration works best through a free-flowing stream of consciousness, even in response to specific questions.
While many of the questions address very personal issues and there is essential value in private contemplation - guidance, feedback, debate, and hearing about the perspectives and experiences of others can provide another avenue towards exploration and growth.
