WHAT IS SPIRITUALITY?
Despite renewed interest over the past decade, there is much confusion regarding what spirituality actually involves. What is the relationship between spirituality and religion? Spirituality and metaphysics? Spirituality and science?
Spirituality is described as involving two distinct elements. First, there are universal spiritual principles -- a "philosophical DNA," found in almost all belief systems throughout the world and recorded time. Referred to as "the perennial philosophy," these principles can be summarized as a belief that (1) there is a God or higher spiritual order (we are part of something greater than ourselves); (2) God exists within (we are spiritual beings within physical bodies); and (3) all are best served through cooperation, charity, and compassion to others.
Second, beyond a commitment to spiritual principles, spirituality is living philosophy. It comes from the heart, not the head. It involves a multi-level, nonverbal awareness of a direct connection between the individual and the greater order or God. How to recognize and access such spiritual feelings is discussed.
